"What continues to intrigue me is that I can use my experiences, my daily life, my childhood, my observations and my thoughts in developing ideas and designs for products. I have become aware how privileged I am to be able to make a living from the activity that I like best - designing"
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1964, Alfredo Häberli relocated to his current base in Switzeland with his family in 1977. Often referred to as a designer's designer, his portfolio includes partnerships with Volvo, OFFECCT, Iittala, Alias, Classicon, Moroso and Luceplan. Häberli's architectural training regularly shows through in his practical and multi-functional approach that expands the purpose of many of his designs.
This approach is well demonstrated with his Segesta design - a multipurpose chair that can be used both inside and outside. The use of a new plastic technology and the flowing character of the design, combined with the flexibility of the back rest and its stackability, are the basis for its success. "The length of the armrest was intentional so it would fit well at a dining table or serve as a more relaxed armchair," says Häberli. "The multiplicity of its use is nearly endless, and the variety of the support frames adds even more possibilities."
